Ideas For Music Video

Going through the process of my ideas for my music video, I decided to watch lots of pop and quirky music videos in order to pick up different ideas and techniques ideas. At this stage I know what song I am looking to do which is ‘Lips are Moving’ by the artist Meghan Trainor.

Immediately this has given me the idea of lips being a huge focus of my music video. An idea I had in mind is a close up of just lips signing along to the song. I will use different people and film them individually, each with different and eccentric lip art on it so it will make the video bright and exciting. I also saw Nicki Minaj’s ‘Super Bass’ video and liked the idea of glow in the dark lips so that is a huge focus idea on the lips as well. I mainly got the idea of lips from just watching tv over summer and seeing a 'Ministry of Sound' advert for their summer album. As I am not a makeup professional or a huge arty person, I will have to be realistic in what I can do and create with the lips and I don’t just want them to be basic red or pastel pink colours, I want them to be more imaginative and exciting for the audience.

Again wanting to make this video as exciting for my audience I want to incorporate lots of exciting props and things to it. I watched a few of Meghan Trainor’s music videos as she is the artist I will be using, and saw she had many different things such as balloons and confetti so it gave me the idea to use these kind of things in my music video. This music at right of the start of the song has a strong beat behind it so I gave me the idea of shooting a speaker while the song is playing. This further game me the idea of having glitter or liquid in the speaker and it reacting to the beat of the song so it jumps which I have been seen done in some experiments so I will need to test this to make sure it will work.  As my target audience is girls I want to include more girly things, so I like the idea of using petals and dropping them on top of my model as well.

With my music video research and analysis I found out that a key part of any music video is the have a relationship between lyrics and visuals. This therefore gave me the idea to have lyrics on screen. I watched Katy Perrys Birthday music video, which was all lyrics and had different ways to show the lyrics on screen. For the lyrics ly-ly-lying, baby I had the thought of using magazine letters cut out and shoot them individually and edit them one after the other so they words each pop up when the song sings this part of the song. I dont want my video to be full of  lyrics so I may use this on more lyrics and incorporate fun different ways to do this, but I will only use this technique in a small proportion of this video.

As this is a girly video I wanted something quite funny in it as well. I got ideas from the band Little Mixs videos to see if I could use ideas from what they have done in the past. Something I found quite fun is the girls all dancing in their pyjamas and singing into brushes, hair-straighteners etc. This could is a fun idea to include in my music video as it is something that many girls do when they feel people arent watching which could incorporate the idea of voyeurism in my music video. Another idea I found quite cute is being in a dark setting e.g. a garden at night, with fairy lights behind and holding a sparkler making the setting really girly and appealing. Although the music I am using is very upbeat, I will have to see if the darkly lit setting will go with the music as dark settings are usually used for slower music. Therefore I know I will have to test a lot of my shots to know if it is right for this music video.

An inspiration I got from Beyoncé’s ‘countdown’ music video is the idea of split screens. I like the idea of seeing multiple things at once and this could link well with the lips idea and seeing lots of lips at once. I also like the idea of seeing the artist multiple times and that they could be doing different things each time. However I will need to carefully think about this technique as the software we have at school and what is available to me isn’t of a higher ability to what huge stars that have hundreds of thousands of pounds going into their video have. I only have the software that the school has and anything extra I need or want will need to be brought with my own money.

Although there will be lots more included in this video, a final idea I liked was the idea of a projector screen being put over the top of the artist while singing. This can allow me to put different graphics on top of the artist and make it more fun and exciting. I wont put too much-complicated things that will be projected onto the artist as this could either hide the artist or be too distracting or harsh on the eyes. Therefore again with this type of technique I will test it before filming properly so I can get a feel of what will be the outcome in my final music video.
